Armando Cinturão Semo

I am a biologist with an interest in human population genetics and its applications to forensics, as well as in the study of genetic factors related to infection susceptibility and drug efficacy. In addition, I am very interested in ethical, legal and scientific issues involving the creation of sample biobanks for population genetic studies.

In 2013 I got an MSc degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Beira Interior, Portugal, where I carried out a project on the genetic diversity of the Macua and Changana, two major populations of Mozambique. In 2016, I joined CIBIO's "HumanEVOL - Human Evolutionary Genetics” group in the context of my PhD work, under the supervision of Jorge Rocha. For our research, we are using a genomic dataset of diverse ethnolinguistic groups from Mozambique in order to shed light on the Bantu expansion by assessing the interplay between genetics, linguistics, and geography.
